XP Home Networking Help

Guest

Hello, I have a Compaq Desktop with XP Home Addition, an IBM Laptop with XP
Proffessional, and a Netgear Router/hub connected to a DSL modem. The PC's
are ethernet attached to the web via the hub. It works fine. I have tried
to set up a home network using the Network Setup Wizard. I go through the
interview and reboot my computer, but when I go to "View Workgroup Computers"
I get "Mshome3 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this
network resource. Contact your administrator." I am set up as the
adminisrtator. I have tried multiple time with firewalls turned on and off.
The interview choices I make are:
1. This computer connects to the inernet through a residential gateway...
2. The PC names are correct.
3. Workgroup name is "MSHOME3".
4. I select "Turn on file and print sharing.

Help. Thanks.

Bob,

A disabled firewall can cause problems. Also, check for misconfigured /
overlooked firewalls:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/your-personal-firewall-can-either-help.html>

Also, check for registry setting restrictanonymous:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/07/restrictanonymous-and-your-server.html>

If no help yet, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each
computer, and we'll diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked
articles, and follow instructions precisely:

Chuck, thanks for the understandable direction. I uninstalled firewalls so
just Microsoft firewall is running on the IBM Laptop and Norton firewall is
running on the Compaq. I looked at the firewall settings but did not change
any.
I was a bit spooked by the registry direction, so I did not make any changes.
I ran IPconfig and Browstat on both devices. Here is the output:

If the registry setting restrictanonymous is relevant to your problem, you're
going to have to fix it. It's a common cause for your problem.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/07/restrictanonymous-and-your-server.html>

If a firewall is causing the problems, you'll have to fix that. You may have to
start by un installing, following all vendor instructions.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/your-personal-firewall-can-either-help.html>

Or do some more diagnosis. Take the following code (everything inside the
"#####"). (Please verify computer names and ip addresses).

1. Open Notepad. Ensure that Format - Word Wrap is not checked. Highlight
then Copy the code (Ctrl-C), precisely as it is presented, and Paste (Ctrl-V)
into Notepad. Verify, and correct, names and addresses if necessary.
2. Save the Notepad file as "cdiag.cmd", as type "All Files", into the root
folder "C:\".
3. Run it by Start - Run - "c:\cdiag".
4. Wait patiently.
5. When Notepad opens up displaying c:\cdiag.txt, first check Format and
ensure that Word Wrap is NOT checked! Then, copy the entire contents (Ctrl-A
Ctrl-C) and paste (Ctrl-V) into your next post.

Do this from all computers, please, with all computers powered up and online.

OK, Bob. Diagnostics are fine, but you have a number of problems, and now it's
time for action.

Since you're behind a NAT router, your computers are more or less safe. You're
going to have to finish un installing firewalls (what did you un install from
IBM?), and un install Norton from Cpq. Follow all instructions from the vendors
- the un install wizard doen't always cut it! Read the articles!

Hi Bob,

I'm sorry you're experiencing problems.

Can all of the machines browse to external sites (such as www.msn.com) via a
web browser (such as IE)?

If these machines can see/browse the internet, but still can't see each
other in the home network, then find out if all the machines are running the
same version of the OS; or are they a mix of Win9X and WinXP machines? Are
you connecting a laptop which you also use at work and which has a corporate
domain already configured on it?

Finally, let me know what each machine sees when you run the following on
them:
Click Start, then Run, then type 'cmd' ('command' if the machine is W95,
W98, or ME), then click OK. At the command prompt, type 'ipconfig' and
press Enter. Let me know the values in each machine that you get for all
four datatypes (DNS, IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway).

Thanks,
Kim

Chuck, I uninstalled the Norton Firewall on the Compaq. It now has the
Windows Firewall running, and no others installed. Previously I had tried
Zonelabs and Sygate. On the IBM I have never installed or uninstalled any
firewall, so just the standard Windows firewall is there.
When I made this change 2 things happened that represent progress. First,
on the compaq, when I select View WorkGroups, it rapidly comes back showing
the Compaq. No more access denied message. On the IBM, I still face the
same erro message, Access denied.
The second change is I can now print share between both Computers. I have
printer A on the IBM, and printer B on the Compaq. I can launch a print job
from either computer on either printer now. Previously this was not
possible. I looked the recommended atricles, but was unsure how to proceded.
What do you recommend I do next?
Thanks, Bob

Kim,
I have XP Home Addition on the Compaq and XP proffessional on the Lpatop. I
can browse the web fine on both PCs. The Laptop is used to connect to the
corporate network via Checkpoint VPN. The IPconfig information has been
supplied in an earlier enrty to this communications thread. As you can see
from the last post to Chuck, some progress has been made. Thanks for any
help you can provide.

Thanks, Bob

Bob,

OK, there's progress. :) One step at a time.

Now we have a language barrier / mental block. "On the IBM, I still face the
same erro message, Access denied." - you mean the view from the IBM? Where
exactly do you see "access denied"?

Access denied can come from so many problems, and it may appear on the source,
or the target, computer.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/mysterious-error-5-aka-access-denied.html

If printer sharing is working, though, this is possibly an actual permissioning
issue. Permissioning can go wrong in a number of ways. XP home uses Simple
File Sharing, and Guest authentication. XP Pro MAY use SFS / Guest, or it may
not. You absolutely must be certain how each system is setup.

Chuck,
1. You asked about Simple File Sharing on the IBM XP Pro. It is correctly
checked.
2. You asked about the access error. I get it when I try to "View
Workgroup Computers". Whe I try, the system pauses for awhile, then comes
back with "Mshome3 is not accessible. You may not have permission...".
3. Regarding account setups, i did a "net user" in the command window but
am not sure how to interpret the results.
On ths Compaq it says:
User accounts for \\COMPAQQQQ

on the IBM it says:
User accounts for \\IBM-09E436C483

But if I go to the control panel and view user accounts I see RobertH as the
Comuter Administor and I see Guest, Guest Account is Off.

Am I confusing different topics above, or is this meaningful?

Thanks,
Bob

Bob,

The Control Panel - User Accounts applet activates accounts for local use. For
network access, please read my article:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html#Activate>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html#Activate

With Simple File Sharing, Guest must be activated for network access.

Are all computers in the same workgroup "MSHome3"?

Chuck,
1. Yes, both computers have been set up to be on Mshome3.
2. On the IBM, I attempted to active the Guest and received a message:
I entered:
net user guest/active:yes

I received:

The syntax for this command is:
NET USER
[user name [password |*] [options]] [DOMAIN]
user name {password |*} /ADD [options] [DOMAIN]
used name [/DELETE] [/DOMAIN]
______________________________
note, the "|" above is actually 2 small up and down dashes.

I tried this useing ASPNET and got the same message.
I tried this using RobertH and got the same thing
I tried this using IBM USER and got "The user name could not be found".

Any advice you can offer?

Thanks, Bob

Bob,

I get the same for "net user guest/active:yes".

Try "net user guest /active:yes" - it makes a difference.

Chuck, yes, the space did make a difference. I made the chang on both PC's
and the change was "successful". I tried to view "Workgroup Computers" and
received the same "assess denied message. I tried setting up a new Home
network and got the same result. Right now, on the Compaq in "My Network
Places", under "Local Network" I see a number of "shared icons relating to
the Compaq. No IBM icons are present. Below this is "The Internet" with a
couble of iCons. But on the IBM "My Network Places" there is no "Local
Network" list and no Icons, just the are relating to "The Internet", with the
same icons as the Compaq. Is this helpful information? Any advise?
Thanks yet again.

OK, Bob,

Now that you've solved one problem - an interfering firewall - let's take a step
back. Rerun "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all", and let's look at them
again. Then we can rerun CDiag. One step at a time.

Bob,

OK, you still have an "error = 53" to deal with. Consider all suggestions in
the article.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/mysterious-error-53-aka-name-not-found.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/mysterious-error-53-aka-name-not-found.html

Or, we can look closer, together, to isolate the symptom. Take the following
code (everything inside the "#####"). (Please verify computer names and ip
addresses).
