XP home install failing!

Durk DeVries

Attempting upgrading to winXP ver. 2002 home from win98SE.
Have tried the following:

1. uninstalled NSW 2003
2. Closing all running apps
3. unplugging my 2nd HDD, used to store backup data
4. Uninstalled GoBack
5. Returned to ps/2 mouse & keyboard from cordless Logitech
6. Set BIOS to all fail-safe settings
7. tried running Upgrade Advisor~received error msg
stating temp folder could not be created.
8. Clean boot
9. updated BIOS
10. modified EVERY BIOS setting I could, unable to force a

HAL as install STILL hangs at the same spot, thru 22 attempts
11. cleaned disk
12. disconnected 2nd CD rom
13. set CPU to default speed
14. set DMA to off
15. Emptied temp, recycle & temp internet folders

All I EVER get is system hangs on the 'preparing
installation' prompt at almost the same point, appx. 76
minutes remaining on install. Waited up to 60 minutes, no
change.

Have Athlon XP2500, 256 ram, Radeon 9200SE card and 40 gig
HD on a Gigabyte 7N400L MB.

I am at the end of my rope & have tried searching
knowledge base for pertainent info on my problem. Have read
articles 310064, 316639. Can some one please show pity on
this fool?
Thanks in advance,
Durk

I think you have gone far enough into the jungle. Time to
start fresh.

You should already have all your data backed up. You will
be way ahead at this point to reformat and install XP
fresh. The upgrade will want you to put the qualifying OS
CD in a drive (98SE in this case) and then it will give
you a nice install.

Durk,

I had the same trouble with my 700 pro2 board - turns out it was because I
had the CD drive on the same IDE as my hard drive. You MUST connect C: to
IDE 1 and CD-Rom (etc) to IDE 2. This will cure the problem

Cheers
