xp home install can't format hdd

Hi,

I'm trying to do a clean install of xp home. Partitioning and formatting
seem to work, but at 100% format I get this message:
"Setup was unable to format the partition. The disk may be
damaged. Make sure the drive is switched on and properly
connected to your computer. If the disk is a SCSI disk,
make sure your SCSI devices are properly terminated.
Consult your computer or SCSI adapter documentation for
more information"
Creating a partition with Knoppix results in an install which crashes
after the reboot...
There are many, many posts about this problem on google, but not one I
can find has a viable answer. I'll continue trying to replace parts,
cables etc. today, but have already read several posts of people
changing every single part of their computer without succes :(

could be a couple of things. First you said you checked the hard drive.
does the mfg have any utilities to format the drive? have you tried using a
smaller partition? If the hard drive is set for maser slave change it to
cable select and put it on the end of the cable. If you are using Cable
select change to master slave.
