XP Home hangs at XP splash screen

Hope someone can help. HP Pavillion ze5270, laptop of the wife of my companies president, had been working but now it hangs at the XP Home splash screen (blue borders top & bottom, XP logo on blue field). Have done the following

Rebooted, F8, Last Known Good - no affect, still hang
F8, Safe Mode - saemresult in the same plac
F8, Safe Mode w/Command Prompt - same as above, same plac
F8, Boot Logging - same result, can't access log

At this point I'm looking at draggin' out my Knoppix CD to access the boot logs. Failing that, I'm thinking Recovery CD (because she doesn't have an original MS XP Home CD and Select library doesn't include XP Home). Obviously, I very much want to recover this install. Any help is appreciated.

Cheers....Mike

Update: used Knoppix to access drive, no boot log files to be read. Apparently, XP never gets that far before it hangs. Any help is appreciated......Mike

Mike I am also fighting this. I have been able to insert a XP home
disk and go throught the repiar options allowing me to get to the point
where i could run the command window and invoke the chkdsk error
checking utlity. Makes no difference received the message that it had
found and repaired errors, however, machine still hangs at the blue xp
logo screen.

Have you made any head way on this?
