XP Home firewall

Hi folks.I`m running xp home w/firewall enabled, also
running Nortons AV.I just had a bout of win32
agobot,svchost, and 2 other worms win32.hll varients. I
had to do a complete format. I just finished windows
update and am wondering if xp firewall is enough firewall
protection. My Av protection prior to infection was CA
Etrust, but the win32`s disabled that quick. I also kept
getting popups from microsoft msgs, or msmg win32 patch
for IE.
So, is xp firewall enough firewall, and, is there
anything i can do do prevent IE compromise? I hope I
havn`t been to confusing.
Thanks you.

April-

XP Firewall is one part of keeping your XP secure, you shouldn't need any
other firewalls. The other pieces of the puzzle are having UPDATED
anti-virus software. You should get updated defenitions at least once a
week. The next piece of the puzzle is security updates from MS. Use windows
update once a month, install critical updates when they are available.

Finally, you can increase IE security. Here is a link with info on how to.
Increase the security level of the internet zone for sure. Set it to
Medium-High and you will be in better shape than the default setting.

Good Luck!

WinXP's built-in firewall is _adequate_ at stopping incoming
attacks, and hiding your ports from probes. It doesn't give you any
alarms to tell you that it is working, though. Nor is it very easily
configurable. What WinXP also does not do, is protect you from any
Trojans or spyware that you (or someone else using your computer)
might download and install inadvertently. It doesn't monitor
out-going traffic at all, much less block (or at even ask you about)
the bad or the questionable out-going packets. It assumes that any
application you have on your hard drive is there because you want it
there, and therefore has your "permission" to access the Internet.
Further, because the ICF is a "stateful" firewall, it will also assume
that any incoming traffic that's a direct response to a Trojan's
out-going signal is also authorized.

ZoneAlarm, Kerio, or Sygate are all much better than WinXP's
built-in firewall, and are much more easily configured, and there are
free versions of each readily available. Even Symantec's Norton
Personal Firewall is superior by far, although it does take a heavier
toll of system performance then do ZoneAlarm or Sygate.
