I have two PC; Dell & Sony laptop. The laptop has XP Home and the Dell
has XP Pro.
When I back up file from XP Pro to XP Home, and they have long
filenames, the Sony with XP Home compains that the filename is too
large.
Both computers' harddrives have been formatted to NTFS.

Is there filename limitation with XP Home or is there a setting I can
adjust to enable equal size filenames as say my Dell?

Cheers

file name/path name length limits should be the same, 255 characters.

Can you give an example of a full pathname that is giving you problems? If
you have some files buried under many levels of folders, and you are saving
to a long(ish) folder path on the laptop, perhaps that is when the limit is
reached

What method are you using to backup?

Details really help us help you.

Hi

I have tried from an external HD, over the network and from a netgear
fileserver all give me the same results.
When I try copying the files I get the error "cannot copy xx
The resulting file name is too long. Specify a diff. file name"

Example file name:

Interfacial aqueous solutions dielectric constant measurements.pdf

Whew, that's a mouthful.

Again, what is the full path to this on your source machine (ie.
c:\documents and settings\me\my documents......)

Where you are copying to, are you adding any further depth of
folders/subfolders?

[[Long Filename Finder is the easiest way to find and shorten filenames that
are too long to be backed up to CD-R (or CD-RW).

Many CD-R mastering programs limit the length of the filenames that can be
stored on the CD-R. In some cases, this length is as short as 62 characters.
Your files can easily have names that exceed the limit, especially for
multimedia files such as MP3 that contain artist, album, title, track number
information. Before backing up to CD-R, you must rename all your files so
that none of the filenames exceed the limit. ]]
