When moving a jpg-photo from a flash drive to an xp-file, I get the error
message "The filename you specified is invalid or too long. Specify a
different filename". I am sure I have transferred much longer filenames than
I am asked to reduce it to here (approximately 10 characters, plus file
extension .jpg).

Folder names also add to the file name length. Perhaps that is part of your
problem.
