xp home edition ?

Apparently, XP Home Edition only allows 5 simultaneous connections from
other computers on a network. (i.e. mapped drive)

Does anyone know if there is a setting that would increase this ? (we need
8)

If not, if XP Professional was purchased, would it upgrade the XP Home
smoothly?

Thanks in advance.

Going from Home to Pro is (usually) no problem, and is your only option,
however it's always prudent to back up your data first.

Correct.

Sorry, there is no such setting.

It's the easiest and most-likely successful of all possible
upgrades. However there are no guarantees that it always works
perfectly. However unlikely, it's always possible that something
might go wrong. For that reason it's prudent to be sure you have
a backup of anything you can't afford to lose before beginning.

Yes, this has been well known since WinXP's release, two years ago.

Upgrade to WinXP Pro.

WinXP is designed to install and upgrade the existing operating
system while simultaneously preserving your applications and data, and
translating as many personalized settings as possible. The process is
designed to be, and normally is, quite painless. That said, things
can go wrong, in a small number of cases. If your data is at all
important to you, back it up before proceeding.

The upgrade from WinXP Home to WinXP Pro, in particular, almost
always goes smoothly, as both operating systems use the same kernel.

You would have to get a Pro Upgrade CD and run it from the present
system; it normally goes smoothly, but always back up data just in case
when doing a major operation like this
