A friend downloaded some update or other and since then he is able to
successfully log on to the ISP but neither IE , Netscape nor Outlook
Express will receive webpages or mail..
A viirus check has been run and machine seems to be clear.
All internet settings seem to be Ok.
Another side effect seems to be that Help and Support files will not
open although there is much disk activity.
Machine also seems to take a long time to shut down.
Your help please.Richard

If it was an update from Microsoft, your friend can uninstall it from
ADD/REMOVE in Control Panel. Or he can use System Restore to go back to a
time before the update. To say "some update or other" is really vague; can
you be more specific?

Thank you all for the help----This chap saw a pop-up which said that"
the updates" were ready !!!!!! He believed that the updates were MS
updates and off he went--------
I believe he did run Restore but whatever it was, had done enough damage
to make re-installation necessary.
Now everything works but of course he has to redo all the internet
connection etc.
Another lesson in the bank !
