On a couple of XP Home Edition machines at a client's I tried to ensure that
all the latest SP's for Windows were installed by going to the Microsoft
support site and selected to scan for updates.
The update program found updates but on one I had to give up. After 2.5
hours the progress bar stopped moving.
I tried it again, same thing happened.
The other machine took over 3 hours but it did finish. The Internet
connection is DSL and usually reasonably fast.

Has anyone seen this?

Any comments would be appreciated

I haven't seen that happen. Might perhaps be overly aggressive setting for the Antivirus program. Try disabling it temporarily while installing the update to see if that is it. Best not to do anything else with the computer during that time with AV disabled.

DO A DISK CLEAN THEN DEFRAG AND CLEAN OUT TEMP INTERNET
FILES...TRY THAT... THE COMPUTERS MAY HAVE TOO MUCH
UNWANTED AND UNNEEDED STUFF ON THE COMPUTER AND POSSSIBLY
NOT ENOUGH MEMORY

I had varied experiences with the last group of 4 updates: On two XP Pro
machines and one Win2K, the download was quick, the install portion drug on
for tens of minutes. On an XP Home box, the install went in the blink of an
eye! All four boxes run Norton AV (the 2K and one XP Pro use corporate
version). No rhyme or reason here!

Thanks to all,

The machines have regular Norton AV, default settings.
I will try the clean, defrag etc. It was just that I had never seen anything
that slow, but I have never used the Home Edition, so I did not know if this
had anything to do with this version of Windows.
