I just replaced win 98 with XP home edition and my computer keeps freezing whenever I scroll through the start menu as well as other menus too. My PC also freezes for no reason at random times. I used norton utilites 04 to scan for problems but I fixed them all. Any help would be usefull Thanks

thanks for the help I went to to the event viewer and the only error it showed was this, which has to be the problem.
Explanation
The system BIOS attempted to incorrectly access hardware resources concurrently with the operating system. This type of access cannot be synchronized and can cause system instability.

User Action
Contact the system vendor for an updated BIOS and follow the vendor's instructions for installation.

My computer is a 4yr old compaq presario, do you have any suggestion to go about getting an updated BIOS. Could I download it off the internet?

The BIOS ought not to be trying to do anything at all. This sounds more
like a program you are trying to run (out of Startup?) which is an old
one that tries to handle hardware for itself - possibly by asking the
BIOS directly; some old scanners on parallel ports; some old FAX
programs would be examples. This approach is strictly forbidden in XP
