XP Home Edition doesn't respond to CD's any more

Dear All,

My Windowx XP Home Edition has stopped responding to CD's. The drive
won't even start spinning a CD. Consequently no info appears in My
Documents.
The drive does however respond normally to DVD's, so it doesn't seem
to be a hardware failure.

I have recently trashed a Nero Burning programma as it didn't work
properly.
I have just downloaded a free CD Burner pro, but still the drivbe
won't respond to CD's.

Would anybody know how I can fix this. Is there some tool to be
downloaded somewehere please?

Thanks,

Harry,

What do you mean by "trashed Nero". Do you mean you have uninstalled it
using Add/Remove program in control panel?. How many CDs have you tried?.
(try a known good CD, music CD for example) Assuming you have a XP setup
disk try to boot from it, if that works then it's not a hardware failure, if
it wont boot then the drive is faulty.

Click Start, Run, type Regedit, click OK.
Locate this Registry Key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class
Key Name: {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Value Data: [Delete All Value Data from UpperFilters and LowerFilters]
Note: Do not delete the Key or the Multi-String Values. Delete only the
data values.
Exit Registry and Reboot

Hi Harry,

The earlier posters gave you good information. However, they didn't do a
very good job to tell you to do one very important task. That is, simply to
clean the DVD and CD players installed in your computer.

Your drives may simply be dirty and need cleaning. If you don't want to
clean them, then you may want to replace them.

Even the back of motherboards, need to be clean every year or two, when
you start to experience problems. Dust creates a path for electricity and
shortcircuits creates major problems, where you think there is a problem
with software.

Thank you Joe, Neil and Creator.

I've been away and ill etc. so have had to rest this issue for a
while. I haven't followed-up on any of your advises I'm sorry to say.
But I have meanwhile found out that it is a LG drive (HL-DT-ST DVDRRW
GWA-4164b). The LG firmware site doesn't display this specific type.
I've also found out that the disc drive's software is by Microsoft. It
is OEM installed by Siemens Jujitsu. So I'll also browse their site
for firmware.

BUT ACTUALLY I HOPE THAT MICROSOFT HAS A REPAIR DOWNLOAD TOO
NONETHELESS. A CLUE ANY OF YOU PSE?

Thanks again,
Harry, Rotterdam
