XP Home edition can not ping Host machine

Hello all

This is an attempt to sort out a Ping error that I get when I try to ping my
host machine from the other 2 Machines on my Network M1 being the host.

My problem is that I can not ping to M1 from M2 or M3 ??? but I can Ping M1
from M1 of course -- I can Ping M2 to M3 or vis versa works .. Ping M1 to M2
or M3 works as well

My set up is M1,M2,M3 M= Machine .. each has XP Home edition installed with
Service Pack 2
I cleaned the registry of any left over folder & file locking software that
I previously had & re-booted
I have re made my network wizard for each machine giving the workgroup
a different name each time I try to reslove this ( same name for M1,M2+M3 of
course ) I have no Norton software installed on M1 at all.

I have NET BIOS Enabled to Default ( Advanced TCP/IP etc WINS folder )
as I have static IP Address's for M1,M2 & M3 ... as thay are on my network
and I also login to them remtly from outside my network so they must have
static internal ip addresses

but I still can not ping to M1 from M2 or M3 ??? but I can still Ping M1
from M1 of course
I have used the use the netsh command to reset the TCP/IP protocol stack i,e
for winsock & interface command.resetlog.tx but this hs not worked I am at a
stand still ?? can anybody shed any light on this

node is set to broadcast on all 3 machines .. ipconfig/all
I have made sure the guest accounts have blanks passwords

Windows firewall is disabled, the firewall active is the 2wire HG 1800 ( my
router )

any help on this would be very helpfull .. if anything needs more
explanation please do not hesitate to ask as I am all ears ((

Use a network sniffer (e.g. Ethereal) so that you can
find out where the ping packets get stuck.

You should also drop the speed of all network adapters
10 MBits/s simplex during your tests.

Hi Pegasus

I will try to find this tool ( is it a freeware tool ) I will google it ..

Ps How do I change the speed on my network adapter the current test sends 32
bytes of data x 4 replies for each ... M1 Times out .. i.e no replies???
NVIDA nForce Networking Controller Pack .. M1 & M2 have the same adapter M3
has a Dell Wireless 1350 WLAN Mini PCI Card, all 3 Machines also have a 1394
Net adapter

.... Ahh just noticed M1 ( the one I can not ping to ) under Device Manager
is called 1394 Net Adapter #2 .. M2 + M3 says 1394 Net Adapter without the #2
... what is #2 ???

Thanks for your interest

The speed and duplex settings of a network adapter
are accessible in the usual way, i.e. by right-clicking
it and examining its properties.

Don't know - I'm not familiar with this adapter. If unsure,
replace it with a different adapter.

OK the adapter is set to Full autonegotiation .. Iget an option nearest to
your suggestion of Force 10 Half or Full Duplex .. which one should I use ??
should it be changed for the Problem machine only i.e M1 ?? and is this only
for the test i.e should I return it to Full auton once I have done

I started Ethereal .. Wow .. looks like it detects things that might give me
some answers ( have not changed speed yet ) ... cAN YOU GUIDE ME THROUGH A
SIMPLE TEST pINGING FROM m1 to M2 .. the vis versa so that I can try to
establish the packets lost ..

Only if you have the time .. if it is not possible to help me I will
understand

See my first reply:
"You should also drop the speed of all network adapters
10 MBits/s simplex during your tests." (=half duplex).

I'm afraid assisting you through an analysis of Ethereal
is beyond the scope of a newsgroup-based exchange
of notes.

Thanks all the same .. you have helped me greatly in that I now have a tool
which may well hise the secrets to my non ping problem

Kind regards

Pegasus

Can you put my mind to rest and confirm that Ethereal only works inside my
network and can not be used to hack into my machine ??

Pegasus \(MVP\)

Ethereal is a network ***monitoring*** piece of software.
It does not open up your PC to any outsider. If you don't
trust it, perform your tests while your Internet connection
is dead, then uninstall it.
