XP Home Crashes

Have XP Home w/crashed last year, so re-installed and also installed SP2.
Recently it crashed again, so I felt I would be better off purchasing &
installing XP Pro because I like it better. Don't know what the problem
could have been since I wasn't attached to the internet when the crash
happened. What remains is a black screen w/Insert CD and reinstall message.
Need to know if I should also install a new NIC to replace the old one?
Purchased computer from a friend and don't know how old it is.

There is very little difference between Home & Pro, primarily Pro can join a
domain.
So you are trying to install / boot from winxp cd and you are getting that
msg?
Could be a bad cd drive, motherboard etc
