XP Home, boots to black screen with movable mouse pointer in normal and safe mode net, only safe mod

One of my relatives (unfortunately, 2000 miles away so I can't get hands on)
has a proble. Her computer was working fine about a week ago, today when
she booted up it went through the boot screens normally (no error dialogs)
and left her on a black screen with only a mouse pointer. The mouse pointer
moves if you move the mouse, but otherwise nothing.

Booting in safe mode with network does the same thing,

Have pulled the network cable, so the machine is totally isolated, but this
doesn't help.

booting in safe mode WITHOUT network seems to work. Ran virus checkers,
nothing, checked for pieces of the SASSER worm on the hard disk, couldn't
find any. Did a scandisk, no errors detected. Tried using system restore
to go back to a day when we know the computer was working, but we still have
the same problem. No new apps were installed since the computer was last
working. The microsoft SASSER protection stuff and all other security
updates were installed on the 14th and the system has worked fine at least
once since then.

Right now I'm trying to get her a copy of the SASSER checker/remover from
Microsoft on a floppy, but if that doesn't work I'm stumped....anyone seen
anything like this before?

Ricky,

I saw this posting and I don't think this is the trouble...the symptoms do
not match. In the Microsoft article they describe a system that hangs right
after the power on self test and will not boot at all in safe mode.

This system DOES display the windows bootup screen but when it would
normally go to the deskop we get a black screen with a mouse pointer THAT
STILL MOVES when you move the mouse. Also, the system works normally in
safe mode but does NOT work in safe mode with network (even with the network
cable pulled).

I posted a similar problem earlier today. I am running
XP Pro and basically had the same problem. Fine last
week. Today, black screen with a movable pointer. I did
get a message that said "Service.exe -entry point not
found" and some info about a missing .dll file. I tried
safe mode . . .nothing, so I just reinstalled XP and it
seems to have worked.

I was able to get a boot log from the machine...it seems to be hanging up
when loading AFD.SYS

The boot log always ends up like this....

The AFD.SYS line repeats continuously depending on how long the machine was
left up.

I tried the sasser removal tool and found the machine wasn't infected. Did
manage to get a boot log which always ends like you see below (AFD.sys just
keeps repeating over and over)

If I do a "repair install" will it clobber the registery and make me have to
install all the 3rd party software again? I'm really trying to avoid that
as the computer is some distance away and my Mom would have to do all the
work of re-installing (NOT FUN). If anyone has a solution that might not
require a full reinstall of everything, I'd love to hear it.
