XP Home boots only in safe mode

I am working on a XP home that has been messed up for a while. The
dealer installed Home on a 2.1 gb partiton. The balance of the 40 Gb
hard drive was a fat 32 partion. The 2.1 gb. partition was a fat not
fat 32 partition. I used PM and Drive Image to set up a 40 gb. single
partition. The machine boots only in safe mode . In normal mode, I
get the Windows XP home logo and when that screen goes away, the
loading process dies. I am at lost on how to fix this.
I don't have access to the OEM Windows XP disk- it is at his home and
he is out of town--

I have tried boot to last known good gonfigeration- failure.

I have tried booting with debugging turn on - failure.

Any suggestions.

thanks

Hi ... By any chance did you mess with msconfig setting ? If so , check the
boot.ini tab as to whether you have a check mark on "Safeboot" , If so ?
Just remove it and see if that helps

No, It appears to be a video problem. I tried logging on using VGA
mode and I can log on, but I have to try to get that fixed.
