XP Home auto update hangs

I have an XP Home system which I normally install patches on manually so
that I know what each of the patches is supposed to do. This morning I
allowed it to do its own thing and install them automatically when
shutting down. When I return to the system some four hours later it is
still claiming to be installing the updates and telling me that I should
not turn the system off.

Quite clearly it is lying and not doing anything but is it safe just to
turn off the power or is windows likely to kill itself at that point.
