XP Home as Server

I developed a web site recently and was planning to have
my computer act as it's own server. I have learned that
I cannot do that on XP Home. How can I upgrade to XP pro
without erasing my entire hard drive?

You can upgrade in place - get a WinXP Pro Upgrade CD. Back up your data
first, tho.

Note - workstation OSes are limited to 10 concurrent inbound network
connections - that doesn't mean 10 users/computers, as each might have more
than one connection open. If this will be an issue for you, you will need to
buy a server OS.

Hi Jim,

With a regular retail WinXP Pro Upgrade disk. It will upgrade a WinXP Home
system.

To answer your question, yes you can upgrade to XP Por without losing any
data. You will just need to preform an Upgrade Install.

Too add to this Windows XP Home can be used as a server through third party
software like Apache. There is one problem with using XP (Any version) as a
server. Windows XP Home you are allowed 5 connections to your PC at once.
With Windows XP Pro you are allowed 10. So if you plan to give the site out
for many people to come and visit you will be limited on the number of
people connected at once.

In order to get around that you should purchase a server OS, such as Windows
Server 2003.

A regular Pro Upgrade CD, run from the present System; Install,
continuing with upgrade

Or investigate an alternative server package, like the widely use Apache
from www.apache.org
