Xp 'hangs'

Hey
The problem Ihave is that windows seems to every minuet or so to hang, or
freeze for a second or so then will work fine. This includes the mouse and
keyboard to stop responding, audio and video to cut out etc..
I have checked in the task manager with the system at a standstill. It seems
to show the processor to max out to 100% usage. This seems to have no effect
on any processes which are running as all there levels remain as zero. apart
from the system idle process which may drop to 98%, (I'm presuming the system
idle is when the system is at a standstill).
At first I presumed it would be spyware or a virus, but my firewall, and
virus scanners show the system is clean.
has anybody one had this problem? or know any solutions I would be very
grateful for some help and advice,
Thank you for your time

Hi!

What kind of Antivirus do you use? I had this phenomenon one some of our
company notebooks. Some run with TrendMicro Internet Security, some with
Norton Internet Security. On both kinds of machines I could solve these
"temporary hangs" by uninstalling the antivirus, Reboot the notebook and then
reinstall. During the reinstall I had no more hangs and after it the machines
just ran as they were supposed to.
On one Notebook I left for experimenting, I saw that it is enough to shut
down the Antivirus software and stop all corresponding services (firewall
etc.) to see if this is the cause of the problem.

You are correct that the System Idle Process is what your processor is
doing when it's idle. (It's the CPU's equivalent of twiddling your thumbs.)

Neither your virus scanner nor your firewall will detect the presence of
spyware. You need a specialized spyware scanner to do that. Actually,
you need several, since spyware is often very tough to pin down.

You need to install anti-spyware software. But for now, try this online
scanner:

Sort of, but not exactly. The System Idle Process represents the unused
portion of the capacity. The system doesn't have to be at a standstill to
have System Idle Process. For eaxmple if you are using 20%, the System Idele
Process is 80%. It's thereto make total add up to 100%

At first I presumed it would be spyware or a virus, but my firewall,

Neither your firewall nor virus scanner protects you against spyware. You
need to also run at least two anti-spyware programs. If you're not doing
this, it's very likely that you are infected with spyware.

I recommend that you go to Malke's Malware Removal site at
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware and follow
the instructions there.

Hi Jonny,

I do not have a solution for you, I'm sorry.
But I know that a good friend of mine has the same problem.
I have taken a look at his machine, and I don't think it has something to do
with firewalls or virus-scanners.
When opening a map in the explorer, the CPU of the machine goes to 100%.
Looking in the taskbar of the machine (processes) shows, that EXPLORER.EXE is
consuming all the resources.
Thumbnails and icons are shown very, very slowly (a map might take minutes
to complete) and then the CPU returns to it's 'normal' state.
The machine runs well until the next map is opened...

I think your problem is the same?
Who can help us??

Hey.
I couldnt find a solution to the problem, unfortunatly i had to reinstall
windows and this did solve the problem, possibly the worst solution i know!
but its probably much easier to do than find a solution! it gave me many
headaches!

Sorry i cant help, i spent along time searching for solutions online etc,
but was unsuccessful, if you have any luck in solving it any other way i
would be pleased to know!

Cheers Jonny
