hello everyone, anyone.....

Ok, so my laptop was a speed machine at one time. i could play heavy gaming
with ease and run many programs with ease. my system performance seems to be
getting worse. for a few weeks my cpu usage has reached and stayed at 100%.
having multiple programs open is a speed nightmare. basically everything has
slowed down. looking at processes my system idle seems fine staying in the
90's. i have run every spyware and anti-virus program i can find and to no
avail. today, programs are hanging(not responding) and closing these with
task manager is pretty common this afternoon and evening. I have given
thought to updating hardware drivers as well as defragging but have a feeling
these will not help. Maybe I'm at my limit with this issue and am losing my
ability to think through this. Sigh. Can anyone guide me through some
troubleshooting steps?

Are you leaving your computer on 24/7?

How much RAM memory?

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

You should be able to gather more information from Task Manager. With
the Processes tab open select View, Select, Columns and check the boxes
before Peak Memory Usage and Virtual Memory size. What are the figures
for the 6 processes using the largest amounts?

Open Disk Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and
click on Save As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My Documents
Folder and post a copy. Do this before running Disk Defragmenter as it
is more informative.

What are your installed anti-virus and anti-spyware programmes?

Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp to
Empty your Recycle Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files. Also
select Start, All Programs, accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp,
More Options, System Restore and remove all but the latest System
Restore point. Run Disk Defragmenter.

Hope this helps.
