PC slowed to insufferable snail's pace

I have a 10-year-old Compaq w/Pentium 3 (I think), running Windows XP Home,
now with Service Pack 3. About a year ago I installed a new, larger harddrive
and doubled the memory to 512 mb (I think). When running videos or watching
YouTube stuff, the whole system would hang up for 30-90 seconds and then kick
back in. I thought my fresh drive and added memory would solve the problem.

Over the past six to eight months the machine has almost come to a
standstill - takes up to 2 or 3 minutes just to start up & get to my home
page. Videos and music are impossible: a video starts, runs 30 seconds or so,
then hangs up for a couple of minutes, kicks in again for 30-45 seconds and
hang again.

This hanging up is not the sole province of videos. Just clicking a link on
a page can take up to 2-3 minutes just to open the link. Then it runs fine
for a few minutes and locks up again. Same thing trying to read e-mail.

I run !avast anti-virus often, as well as Spyware Doctor, and SpyBot Search
& Destroy. Now and then I also run the Glary Utilities package; and clean up
files, defrag & all that. Nothing helps.

Any help, please. I just want to watch my porn once again.
