XP hangs whent network is lost

XP SP2 with all the latest updates

Whenever there is a loss of network connectivity caused by one of our
switches or routers XP hangs while looking for the connected mapped drives
and other connected remote resources.

I can duplicate this problem on any machine by using a personal hub/switch
connected to the parent switch. I can then pull the cable that is connected
from the personal hub to the the parent switch and XP will hang because it
does not recognize that the connection has been lost. Is there a setting to
reduce the time that XP takes to recognize the lost connection? This happens
temporarily with larger network outages at our home office or at
site-to-site VPN locations that lose their connections.

It will however come back after approximately 10 minutes if you are patient
enough.

Try to disable media sense (See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q239924/).
You have to set the registry value
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\DisableDHCPMediaSense to 0x1 and restart the computer.
