System Hangs when loss of Network

Whenever the network at our location goes down XP hangs for about 10-20
minutes attempting to look for all connected network resources. I also
experience this same issue if VPN gets disconnected abruptley while on
wireless. If I just pull the cable from the NIC I do not experience this
issue.

Is there anyway to prevent this from happening or at least shorten the
interval at which it searches for these network resources?
 
Thank you, but we already have that disabled via a group policy.

Any other suggestions?
