XP hangs when USB 2.0 external drive is turned on

Hi

It used to work OK. My XP pro system hangs when I turn on a USB 2.0 external hard drive. It also won't boot (hangs on a blank screen) if the drive is on. Everything works OK if the drive is off

I think that the problem may be related to installations of Microsoft Sidewinder USB software. I have removed the Sidewinder software, but the problem remains

Ideas? I need the data on the external drive

Thanks

I have a similar problem ... when a USB camera or disk is plugged in at boot
time, windows will not boot. If i plug in ANY storage device (USB AND
FireWire!) windows will crash after a few seconds.

Reinstalling Windows XP does not help ... any suggestions ???

Thanks,
Jeffrey
