Xp hangs up after Logo screen

I have a home built computer, I have revamped it a couple times and kept the
old profiles and created a new one. This last time after doing the updates I
had a issue when after the Window blue scrolling bar screen it would just
hang up and not go to the Welcome screen. If I leave it alone long enough it
will actually restart itself but still do the same thing.
Now the strange thing is everytime I can get it to start using Last Know
Configuration off of F8. Now some items that I've updated like anti virus may
need to be updated again when it happens, but any programs that I had
installed under last session seem to be functioning ok.

Is there a possiblilty that something is corrupt in the normal start up, and
if so, any suggestions what it might be?

Thanks

I just built a new pc for a friend and I am experiencing the same problem. I
tried windows xp first, and I couldn't get past the logo screen. I thought
it was a bad copy of xp, so I tried installing windows 2000 pro and got the
same results. I was thinking that the problem may be the result of a damaged
hard drive. I am using the following hardware:

Biostar NF4ST-A9 mobo; AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 939pin; Sapphire Radeon X700
PCIx16 graphics card; 1G (512x2) Corsair PC3200 DDR400 ram; 80Gig Western
Digital Hard Drive; Liteon DVD RW; Aspire 520W power supply

I can choose Last Know Configuration and go right through ok to the Welcome
screen. It's when I let it try to start normal that it hangs, so it's a
little strange that the Last know configuration works fine. It's just
annoying cause I have to re update some items like Anti-virus. As for the
file system is NTFS and I'm running a 2.53 P4 with 2 512MB Ram Generic
PC2700, I have a 140 GB, 160GB IDE and a 250 GB SATA. A ATI AIW 7500 Video
card on a Asrock P4VT8 Motherboard.

run windows sytem restore!

start>all programs>accessories>system tools>system restore

I am using FAT32, I try NTFS, but it says my partition size is too large and
that I have to use FAT32. I am using a 20Gig partition.
