xp hangs on load

Hi,

I went over to help a neighbor out and ran into a problem I hand't seen
before.
XP won't finish the load, hangs with a dialog box that says unable to load
explorer or something like that.
It's a Compaq running a 1.6 gig celeron cpu. about 3 years old.
Hitting F8 it starts to come up in safe mode, and hangs in the same spot.
Hitting F10 runs a compaq restore, but it hangs in the same spot.
The owner didn't make restore disks, and none came with his system.
The book said to make them before a problem arose. duh...
There is a partition on the hard drive that has the restore data, however,
I think it only works with the restore disks had they been created.

Has anyone run into this and is there a work around other than
buying a retail copy of XP and rebuilding the system?

Thanks,

Mike

never heard this before, restore Disks have always come with a compaq, even
the laptops.
no XP disk either?
a repair install of XP could work, but no disks no luck fixing this.
from safe mode command prompy only try:

c:scanreg /fix or scanreg /restore [space] between g and the slash

Hi JAD,
thanks for the suggestion.
Nope, no restore disks and no operating system disk.
The manual explicitly said they didn't come with the
system, and said you should make restore disks on
your own.

Personally I'd try run/cmd/sfc /scannow first followed by a repair install
if that doesn't fix it. You'll need a suitable version of XP available.

The client presumably has a valid XP license so you shouldn't need to buy a
retail pack. Can you not borrow a copy of an XP OEM disk from someone?

Yes, the license is valid because he bought the computer from Best Buy
or
Circuit City, I forget which. I have a friend in Atlantic City who bought
a retail version of XP Home, and she would lend it to me I'm sure. Do
you think that would work?
I'll try the dos routine first, of course. Thanks,'
