XP freezing, mouse jumping around

Once I log on XP Home, I usually go 5-15 minutes before my
mouse seems to stop moving smoothly. The computer will
then on its own open 4 or 5 windows other than the one I
am in. This can happen in any program. It will also
refresh web pages on its own if I am in Exporer. Soon
thereafter my mouse will stop working altogether and I
have to reboot the computer. I have taken others'
suggestions such as: 1)reinstalling the mouse, 2) trying a
different mouse 3) checking if my computer fans are
working in case the unit is overheating. None of these
seem relevant. Please suggest something. Thank you all!
