I have scanned for virus and lots of mem.the task mgr says cpu for system
idle process is at 96 but constantly changes from 77 through to 98.mostly in
90's though. I have no idea what is going on and have been suffering with
this for awhile. I also find that my server times out (even tho at max
setting) when sending small emails with tiny 640KB attachments. ...what is
going on? Pleeeese hellllp. Lou

Microsoft would start checking with MsConfig utility, read article kb310560

Is this this just in the period up to say 5 minutes afer booting or
does it continue until shutdown?

You need to post a complete copy of the any Warning or Error Report
for a single session as they appear in Event Viewer. No information
reports and no more than six reports please.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click for further information. You can copy using copy
and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no further
information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event Viewer.
Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the
message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.

"System Idle Process" is not any problem at all. That's just the name for
what the system is doing when it's not doing anything. It's there to make
the total add up to 100%

Look elsewhere for your problem.

You say you've scanned for viruses, but with what program? Are the virus
definitions up-to-dtae?

You don't say anything about scanning for spyware. If you haven't done that,
you should, and with at least *two* different anti-spyware applications. I
recommend Adaware and Spybot Search and Destroy, both free.

Open Task Manager and go to the Processes tab.
Click twice on the CPU column header to sort the list into descending
order based on CPU usage.
Ignore the "System idle" process (which just keeps track of the time
when the system has nothing to do) and make a note of the 3 or 4
processes with the highest CPU usage. Post those names back here.

Good luck
