XP freezes when restarting (warm boot)

If I choose to 'Restart' (Warm Boot) Windows XP Pro about 50% of the time
this is what happens. Windows shuts down, the PC goes thru the initial (Bios
Messages), then displays the option to choose either Windows XP or the
Recovery Console, the count down timer begins and about 5 seconds into the
count down the PC freezes (counter stops) or if I immediately hit the Enter
key when the count down begins the PC will freeze, again this happens about
50% of the time, the other 50% of the time the boot process is OK. My work
around has been to power off the PC then after a few seconds power up at
which time the boot process works OK and I can log on.



Any ideas as to what could be the cause.

have you tried to do the F 8 key before the
system reboots for more options?

Tried the F8 key options, they all cause the same issue, the PC locks up as
soon a you select a listed option.

The fact that this happens randomly makes me think it is
hardware-related and not software. If you had a bad driver, I'd expect
the error to happen every time. Something is failing when heated up.

Testing hardware failures often involves swapping out suspected parts
with known-good parts. If you can't do the testing yourself and/or are
uncomfortable opening your computer, take the machine to a professional
computer repair shop (not your local equivalent of BigStoreUSA).
