XP freezes when I put a disk in DVD-ROM drive

I've had this Dell PC for 3 years and no trouble with DVD-
ROM drive. Upgraded to XP 1 year ago. Two weeks ago, I
started having trouble with the DVD-ROM drive. If I put a
disk in and close the door, XP freezes. I can switch
users and things work, but if I return to the original
user, I don't even get a task bar or any icons on the
desktop until I remove the disk from the DVD-ROM drive.

I had this same problem on a Compaq PC at work (Win 2k)
for about 6 months. The problem mysteriously disappeared
after Novell client was installed. Incidentally, after
loading Novell client, some of my internal drives (DVD-
ROM, CD-RW, Zip) were assigned different drive letters).

Any ideas on what I should look for?

BTW, DVD-ROM currently shows a Roxio driver installed
(from Easy CD/DVD Creator). I couldn't find a driver on
the NEC website for this drive.

Your DVD might be using device drivers from your previous OS. Try
re-installing or updating the device drivers for WindowsXP from the DVD
player manufacturers webisite.
