XP freezes all the time

Hi,

I am running XP Home Edition. Everyday, it freezes without any reason.
When it freezes, I can still move the mouse around. Sometimes, if I press
the Windows key on the keyboard, the Start menu will come up but the menu
will freeze right there.
When XP freezes for couple seconds, sometimes the computer will beep once.
Sometimes it will not.

Control-Alt-Delete will not display the Task Manager.
I have to turn off the computer and restart.

Any idea? Virus? Spyware?

ya, you could have a trojan or virus, either that or you
broke it somehow. run some scans first, then think about
repairing.

I've already run virus scan and adware scan.
Nothing shows up.
I am trying to trace the problem.
The last thing I remember is that I installed a 1394 PCI adapter.
I will take it out and see.

Your problem does sound very similar to my own although I do not get any
sound. I doubt mine is due to hardware since I have not changed my hardware
in the last year. Do you regularly keep your Windows updated? It occurred to
me that one of the updates may have been buggy. Also, what ever software do
you have loaded on your computer which could be causing the crash?

Most often with hanging it is a driver issue, or a heat issue. See if
you can download a utility that can tell you the temperature of your
CPU. If its over 60C that may be whats causing the issue.

I am gussing it is the sound card driver issue.
It is an on-board SoundMax sound card from the ASUS motherboard.
I am gussing that the driver does not like Direct X 9.0b.
becasue when I play Starcraft, the sound will suddenly stop before XP
crashes.
(but) sometimes there is no problem at all for the whole day.
Heat may not be the issue here because it will crash right after I turn on
the computer in the morning after 1-2 minutes. It is totally random.

There isn't any newer drive. So, I slide the Hardware Acceleration thing
from "Full" to "None".
I will be testing it more with the "None" setting.
