Xp Freeze

I put together a system with Asus P4P800-VM motherboard
which has a Intel P4 2.4 Ghz processor, a seagate hard
drive, toshiba dvd-rom (old one). I have no floppy drive,
so, I set the boot options to boot from CD and then
installed Win-XP. The installation went fine. When I
insert a data cd i.e any cd with drivers or instalation
software, when xp tries to explore it, the machine freezes
up and I have to power cycle to recover. In DOS mode, I
can acces the cd and do dir etc. So, basically xp is
having a problem accesing the drive. I checked the
toshiba web-site for drivers and basically the model is a
native drive and does not need new drivers. Also, if I
insert a music cd, win media player starts up and the
machine does not freeze. Is there something in the bios I
have to set for this to work ? or what kind of issue is
it ? Thanks,

No, the BIOS only needs to know its there. It does not control how CDs
are accessed, the OS does that.
It seems there is some sort of conflict with something else that is
causing this problem. This can be:

a) Bad registry entries
b) Old CDR/RW burner software eg. Easy CD 4 etc
c) You do not have UDF reader software installed to read Packet
written discs
d) Bad entries in Device Manager (wrong or extra driver installed)
e) Out of date Motherboard Firmware (BIOS upgrade required)
f) Out of date DVD ROM firmware
g) Out of date DVD Playback software

See Microsoft Knowledge Base about Troubleshooting these possible
problems. Also check Device compatibility as well with XP.

Maybe a newer drive will help. They are quite cheap these days.
