System32\Drivers\Ntfs.sys missing or corrupt.

(Windows XP Home SP3)

I have a refurbished Toshiba NB100 netbook computer and occasionally I
get the error that windows could not start because
"System32\Drivers\Ntfs.sys is missing or corrupt". I have searched the
newsgroups and googled for a solution to this but, although there are
lots of instances and solutions posted, they all need the installation
CD. I did not get any CD'c with the computer, in any case, the netbook
does not have a CD/DVD drive!
I do have two Win XP discs for two other computers. Does anyone know how
I can correct this error without the original installation CD?
Thanks for any answers...

Occasionally? If you don't get the message every time, the problem
might be with the hard drive or its controller. After all, the file is
there, albeit hidden, if it's ever found.

Look in the C:\Windows\i386 folder and see if the file, or a compressed
version is available.

You could also get the file from one of the CD's, using another machine,
copy to a thumb drive, and then copy to the hard drive.

Thanks for such a quick reply, I wondered about copying the file as you
suggest but non of the answers I read suggested this rather obvious
remedy, I thought that there must be a reason why this is. I found the
file on the computer so I know that one is there, it must be corrupted
or, as you suggest, it could be a problem with the HDD. I have also seen
solutions that have proved to be memory based. I will wait a bit longer
to see if anyone comes up with any other suggestions and then I'll try
copying as you suggest. Thanks again!

If you only get the message occasionally you might have one of two things:

1 - Memory Error
2 - Hard Disk Error

The solution to #1 is a bit obvious. The solution to 2 could be one of many.

1 - Corrupted file system
2 - HD going bad.

Solution for #1 Boot from a CD like Bart PE then run chkdsk /r or if you do
not have a CDROM remove the drive and place either in a USB external
enclosure or as a slave drive in another system to run chkdsk /r on it.

Solution to #2... Replace HD.
