XP folders slow to open from shortcuts

My XP folders are taking 4-8 seconds to open, but only from shortcuts. If
I have a folder open and I d-click to open a subfolder, or go up the tree
to the parent folder, that is fast as usual.

Any ideas about cause please, or how to isolate?

try to use defragmenter, open widows explorer,
right click on your hard disk, properties, tools
there you see Defrag..., etc

hope this helps

What is the Target properties of the shortcut?
Where are these folder shortcuts?
What anti-virus software do you have? Tried disabling it and retest?
