XP Firewall Slows Computer

I am having a problem where, when I turn on the Internet
Connection Firewall on my XP machine, over the next 5
minutes or so the interactivity of the machine slowly
reduces until it becomes sluggish, to the point where the
mouse jumps around and keyboard response becomes
sluggish. When I turn the firewall back off, it
immediately resumes its normal performance. I have
logging turned off, and my machine runs is 2.4ghz, so I
suspect neither of those are the problem. I am connected
continuous through DSL. Anyone have any thoughs as to why
the build in firewall is causing this problem?
Thanks.

The firewall, by itself, shouldn't cause a noticeable slow-down of
your computer. Have you checked the Task Manager to see what specific
process(es) is suddenly consuming an unusual number of CPU cycles or
an inordinate amount of memory?
