If you are talking about Windows XP PPTP VPN, well, it works with Windows
XP Firewall wihtout any problem. In fact, if you have any other quality
firewall program XP PPTP VPN should work also.

What firewall are you using?

What VPN Program are you using?

a drug dealer an "unlicensed pharmacist"

On your side, you don't need to open anything, NAT allows ALL outbound by
default.

On the PPTP Server side you need more than 1723, you also need a device
that support GRE - most NAT appliances don't handle GRE properly.
Additionally, MOST residential devices don't support more than 2 PPTP
connections in either direction.
