XP fax with DSL

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Ok...lets start from the top. I work mostly with my computer ( although I'm no master by any means )...as a real estate appraiser. Due to the fact that DSL wasn't yet available in my area...I had a dial-up service. Now I have DSL. Anyway...before...I had a separate line ran for a fax machine ( couldn't tie up my dial-up ). Now I'm told that if I combined all my lines into one ( fax, home phone ) with the DSL service...I couldn't recieve faxes if I was on-line. My fax has a different # of course...than my home phone but I could keep the fax # and put it in with a signal ring to distinquish whether or not it was a fax or a phone call. I don't like not being able to recieve faxes while I'm on-line though. My question is...since XP is equipped with a fax machine...can I keep the same # for my fax line and use XP's fax...and get rid of my current fax line...and recieve faxes when I'm on-line? It's very important that I keep the same fax # since I have business cards all over with it on there
Again...thanks to anyone who can help me with this

You can receive faxes when you are using the dsl the same that you can use
the phone while using the dsl. If you have call waiting and Modem on Hold
you can be connected to your dsl provider , use the phone and be notified
when a fax comes in , all one line. Jym

Hi,

Thanks guys but...can I keep my same fax #?
Jim

Yes, you could have a phone line dedicated exclusively to the fax and
another line for the dsl connection. If I recall correctly, that's the
setup you described you had when you had dial up. so just change the
dial up line to dsl and leave the fax line alone, just be sure to use
the microfilters in the fax line.

To keep the fax number different than the telephone number you obviously
have to have a different phone line. The XP operating system has a fax
program , not a fax machine. To use it you will have to have a dialup / fax
modem install and configured. This fax program does not work like a fax
machine. It will only send information that is on the hard drive. My
advice.... If you want to keep your extra line use the fax machine that you
have . It does so much more and better. Jym

You can do it all on one line. Have the fax number do double or triple
rings and your voice number do single rings. Be sure there are DSL
filters on the phone and fax connections. Obviously you can't do fax
and voice at the same time, but you can do either of those while your
DSL stays on continuously.

Make sure any fax machine you plan to use can handle distinctive
ringing. For more details on how to set up this combination, you can
download a PDF version of a fax users guide. I did that before I
bought my HP5510 Printer/Scanner/Copier/Fax machine. That manual is
available at:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...=311255&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&dest_page=product&

See chapter 12 for the phone/fax setup and chapter 5 for distinctive
ring setup. There are also a lot of other configurations described.
