XP failing to boot... most of the time!

Not sure how to explain this but....

when my PC Starts it goes through the POST and then displays the XP loading
page.
Then it displays the Logon scren.

The following can then happen:-

1. I am unable to click on the username at all. mouse moves ok.
2. I can click on the username and enters a password but it then hangs.
3. I can login but it blue screen and reboots.

Finally it works! As I am using it now to post this question.

Looking in the event viewer:
***Application***
The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( KService ) cannot be found.
The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message
DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use
the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for
details. The following information is part of the event: Service started.

***System***
1.The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
NetBIOS

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

2. The NetBIOS Interface service failed to start due to the following error:
The specified driver is invalid.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

3. The server's call to a system service failed unexpectedly.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

I know it's a needle in a haystack jobby but any ideas?
I have tried to re-install my XP Home but because I am using SP2 it says the
newer version on the disk cannot be updated!

ANY IDEAS? Please!
Kind Regards,
Ken
