XP DSL Connections

I have a very weird issue. I will try to make this short.
I had to format my PC with Win XP Home. Before I go get
any windows updates, I create a new DSL connection. I
then connect to the internet with no issues. If I look
in "network Connections", I see a "broadband connection"
called "DSL", (which is what I named the connection when
I made it with the wizard). I can control the connection
and disconnection from this shortcut. I also have a
system tray icon telling me when it is connected. I then
download some windows updates. NOT SP2. Now after I
reboot, my "DSL" connection is missing from the "network
connections" folder. Yet, if I go to make another DSL
connection with the same name, and put a shortcut on my
desktop, it says 'Name already exists'. If I try to
connect to the internet, I can connect, but only when I
open IE and it tells me to either "Connect Stay
Offline". I choose connect. I have no control to
disconnect. In addition, the system tray icon is not
there. Normally I have the DSL connection use a username
and password to authenticate to SBC DSL services.

I tried to remedy this issue with this article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;825826&Product=winxp

However, it didn't work. Does anyone have an idea why, I
can't see my DSL broadband connection in network
connections, but it is an active connection and it works?
Any help would be great.
