XP Drag N Drop.

Weird thing just began happening in the last few days.

An examples is when I drag N drop a video file to a DVD player program shortcut on the desktop, windows xp wants to "Copy" the file to the desktop.

The same thing happens with XL, Word, PDF and a host of other files.

I've searched on the web but can't seem to find anything that relates to this issue.

Windows XP with SP3, all the latest updates and patches are on and have been for some time.

As mentioned, this "apparently" just started happening in the last few days - at least that's when I noticed it.

I would appreciate any help/pointers.

Thanks

Hi Darrin,

If I'm understanding you, dropping a file on to a shortcut won't launch
the program. If the program is open, you can drag the file over the
Taskbar icon and when it displays you can then drop it onto the open
program.

Yes Terry, that works fine.

However, I've always been able to drag n drop onto a shortcut, but not now.

Thinking it may be a profile issue, I restarted in Safe Mode and logged in
as Administrator with the same results. Even my own account in safe mode
fails to do so.

I created a new account, logged in and the same thing.

I know this works and has worked. I've been an MS profressional (MCT - MCSE)
for about 15 years and just can't figure this one out. My other tower and 3
laptops in the
office work just fine.

So it is clearly something amiss on the suspect machine.

I've re-applied service packs and fixes, still nada.

Altho not a show stopper, it is quite annoying and just plain inconvenient.

Cheers...

Strange, I tested it on 3 workstations and none of them would launch the
program by dropping a file on the shortcut.

Did you try a System Restore?

Terry, I'd mentioned in a previous post that a System Restore was done to no
avail.

Strange it doesn't work on any of your systems. It works fine on three of my
office laptops and one desktop. It used to work on the suspect machine, but
stopped working after I installed MS IntelliType 6.30.191.0 with a natural
kbrd.

Soooo, being somewhat anal, I installed MS IntelliType 6.30.191.0 with the
natural kbrd on another Windows XP machine (that worked fine). It now has
the same problem.

I'm not suggesting after this single test that MS IntelliType is the
culprit, so I'll do some additional testing wth new builds, but it sure
seems funny to me.

Also, searching the web for "windows xp drop n drop won't work" yields about
70k items, and not that I am interested in going over all of them, it seems
that this appears to be a somewhat random issue.

I've looked at the ones that suggest "sys restore", reg editing and a host
of other, but nothing seems to fix it.

I hope someone else has seen this and has a solution.

Thanks.
