XP Doesn't Recognize Camera, etc.

The morning after a storm a couple weeks ago my unit wouldn't start and
showed a message explaining something about a missing registry entry. The
CompuDoc came in but couldn't restore the missing registry entry so he wiped
the disc and reinstalled most everything. All went well except the first time
I tried to download pics from my camera. The unit no longer recognized my
camera when I pluged it in. When I called the CompuDoc, we discovered he
failed to turn on one of the necessary drivers. He talked me thru that but it
didn't help the camers situ. Since then I've discovered when I select Save As
then click My Computer it takes 30 seconds of searching to find and open it.
Once open navigation within My Computer is normal. If I close then reopen My
Computer it takes another 30 seconds. In addition, I plugged my flash drive
into a usb port. Once plugged in the flash drive shows up in My Computer.
When I was ready to remove it, the Remove Safely icon is no longer in the
system tray. This unit has Windows XP. I never can remember how to find out
what version so I can't provide that info right now. It would be nice to get
my unit to recognize my camera and to speed up My Computer and the Save As
function. Has anyone ever experienced something like this before? All ideas,
comments, and suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, K.

what likely happened
is that while there was
reading and writing to
the registry file, the
computer lost power.

thus the registry became
corrupted and the
system was unable to
restart as normal.

however, there is a
2 step process that
entails accessing a
basic registry file to
replace the corrupted
one. then windows
will launch again.

then inside the basic
desktop, one can look
for a more up to date
registry to replace the
basic one to bring windows
back to its functionality
again.

and if the above was too
complicated for the Doc,
then a "repair installation"
with the windows cd would
have repaired the operating
system without formatting
and a full install.

instead the CompuDoc
may have chosen to perform a
lobotomy and charge you
brain surgery fees on your
system.

unfortunately, it is impossible
to know from our end what
all was installed on your
system.

perhaps the antivirals are actively
scanning your directories,
thus the delay.

i think you should get
the "quack" back in.

if you want to focus on
the camera, you may have
to visit it's homesite and
look up troubleshooting
facts and maybe download
updates, which may have
been lost with the reinstallation
of windows.

also, you might want to
see if the camera people
provide assistance via email
or toll free number.
