I loaded a update last night. when I restarted my computer it didn't go to
the sign in page for windows xp, it just shows my backdrop picture with no
start menu or icons. I can't use the keeyboard and the mouse just rolls
around, no left click....
I tried to repair using my xp disk to repair but, don't remember my
password. What should I do?

You don't need a password to run a repair install. A password is needed to
enter the recover console which you get to by taking the first R for repair.
But that is not what you need. You won't be able to repair this from the
recovery console. To do a repair install bypass the first R.

But first try the system restore from safe mode that the other poster
suggested. If that doesn't work then do the repair install. Here is a link
on how to do it.

thanks for your reply. Everytime I try to repair, I get it to read the disk
drive then it jumps to the screen to open in which ever mode...None of the
modes work though. thanks for both replies and help.

You need to enter the BIOS and set the CD drive as the first boot device.
How you enter the BIOS is dependent on the system. When the computer is
restarted there should be a message about what keystrokes to press. It will
say to enter setup or BIOS. Once in there change the boot order so the CD
drive is the first item in the boot order. Save the settings and exit the
BIOS.

The article I gave you a link to discusses this issue of going into the
BIOS. This is linked in that article.
