No icons, No Task Manager

My problem is when I boot, No icons, so start menu and no task bar appear.
Ctl-alt-del does nothing. Right clicking does nothing. I have tried a repair
instal and after the reboot the same thing occurs. I would like to try and
save the data on the HD. Im hoping explorer.exe is just messed up and can be
fixed, if so somone please tell me how to do it. Safe mode also has some
result, no icons, right click, etc.

all in all a bad situation.

the sentance "My problem is when I boot, No icons, so start menu and no task

should be

"My problem is when I boot, No icons, NO start menu and no task bar appear. "

Instead of pressing ctrl+alt+del try ctrl+shift+esc and if that works just
run explorer.exe not sure if it will but I guess it's worth a try

Oh and I also had that same problem once and it was Internet Explorer 7

Can you boot into Safe Mode (repeatedly tap F8 starting right after the
POST "beep")?

Safe mode also has some result, no icons, right click, etc. Just the four
little "safe mode" stamps in the corners to try and comfort me.

What happened just before this state of affairs began?

When you tried to go into Safe Mode, did you see the menu for "Safe
Mode," "Safe Mode with Networking," with Command Prompt," etc.? I
assume so, if you ended up at a screen with "Safe Mode" in the corners.

You said you tried a Repair Install. What steps exactly did you do
before you re-booted (only to get the same blank screen)?

If it's not a hardware problem, you may want to save the data on the
hard drive and do a clean reinstall of Windows (you would have to
reinstall all of your applications from CDs or saved install downloads).
Two ways to do that is to install the current hard drive as a slave in
a working XP box or to boot using a CD Linux distro like Knoppix.

Or it may just be easier to take your computer to your friendly
neighborhood computer repair professional (not your version of BigBoxUSA
or GeekSquad).

My state of affairs were normal.

Yes I saw the whole array of safe mode options. trying them all, none
results in any more then the blank page.

I then followed the steps for a repair install- it loaded and saved the
files. Then it said, windows must reboot.... rebooted no problem. Letting it
do its thing like im supposed to it did not reboot from the xp cd. Then
instead of booting from the saved files......another blank home screen.

I used the repair install with command prompt and tried to rebuild the
bootsetup file, to no avail.

I thank you for your time kind sir, hopefully somthing will come about
involving an answer.

Most of the accounts I found on the internet involve hardware or drivers,
not mine because I didnt change a thing prior to the problem. In addition,
trying to go back to a restore point cant work, cause I cant get to it.

Thanks again. let e know what you may think as i search for computer repair
in maryland...
