XP does not recognize security update

I am attemptimg to install Security Update for Windows XP
(KB839645) on my system, but am having problems.

I installed it and received the message that the patch was
successfully installed, but when I run Windows Update
again to check for addiional security patches, this same
one keeps coming up.

Furthermore, it will not let me install it from
the "Windows Update" page. When I attempt to do so, I get
a red message saying that install was unsuccessful. It is
only when I go directly to the Microsoft Bulletin for this
patch that it installs and gives me the "successful
install" message.

Have you disabled services lately?.....
