XP does not recognize my integrated Ethernet adapter

My network adapter was working fine & then I had a hard drive go bad. I
reinstalled the same version of XP Pro with SP2 & all the latest updates.
Everything seemed ok, the LED even shows activity on my integrated Ethernet
adapter when I plug it into the network, but ipconfig shows NO IP & when I
look at "Open Network connections" there are not connections (nor can I add
them). When I look at the device manager, I do NOT see the Nework Adapters
Icon unless I go up to VIEW & I select "Show Hidden devices".

I am thinking of adding a PCI card, but if "you" have any suggestions to try
first, I will try them.

When you clean-install an operating system, you then must install
drivers for all your hardware. It would appear that you forgot to do
that. You need drivers for the motherboard (chipset), video, audio,
network adapter, etc.

Never get drivers from Windows Update. Get them from:

1. The device mftr.'s website; OR
2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard; OR
3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM
computer (HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).

Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the drivers.

To find out what hardware is in your computer:

1. Read any documentation you got when you bought the computer.
2. If the computer is OEM, go to the OEM's website for your specific
model machine and look at the specs (you'll be there to get the drivers
anyway)
3. Download, install and run a free system inventory program like Belarc
Advisor or System Information for Windows.

Will Belarc tell me anything more than running dxdiag from the run cmd?

Not necessarily. Perhaps the component has failed. Since I can't see
your computer, I can't say for sure. Install the correct drivers for
your chipset, ethernet adapter, etc. and see what happens. If it solves
the issue, great. If it doesn't, you need to look to the hardware next.

Yes, but why don't you try it and find out? Both Belarc and System

Have you reinstalled the WinXP-specific device drivers (as supplied
by the computer's or motherboard's manufacturer) for your Ethernet adapter?

The OP needs to double check within the BIOS setup screens to see if
the integrated Ethernet adapter might have been accidentally
disabled / turn off while he was changign the hard drive. If the BIOS
indicates thath the Etherport adapter is supposed to be active, then
he might have "physically" disconnected it or damaged it when he
replaced the hard drive. If this is the "case," then the only "cheap"
solution is to turn off the integrated Ethernet adapter and install a
PCI adapter (or a USB to Ethernet adapter if no available PCI slot.)
