XP does not hibernate or standby

I have a laptop running winXP @512 MB RAM.
Hibernate/standby was working fine till 2 days ago.
However, now my computer refuses to do either. Using
hotkeys, it usually gives me a message asking if i want
to hibernate. This popup still occurs. However, after
that, nothing happens. I tried via Start>Shut Down but
neither work from there. No error messages come up and
everything else is working fine.
