XP creates inccorect IE shortcut path

C

I went to Set Program Access and Defaults and change my
default email program and now XP points IE to a non-
existant working folder. I corrected it in the shortcut
properties but now other programs won't launch IE. I'm
guessing all other applications are now pointing to the
non-existant directory. I can't find a way within the
applications (such as ICQ) to point it to the correct IE
path. Any idea why this happened and how to fix it?

The correct folder:
C:\Program Files\backup\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe

The non-existant folder it points shortcuts to:
C:\PROGRA~1\backup\INTERN~1\iexplore.exe

"C:\PROGRA~1\backup\INTERN~1\iexplore.exe" is just a 8.3 filename convention of the following path:

C:\Program Files\backup\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe

Which application is pointing to this location? And, the correct path would be
"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer"

Windows itself is pointing to the non-existant path. There
is no 'backup' folder under my Program Files folder. When
I set the default browser in Windows to be IE in 'Set
Program Access and Defaults' it changed the shortcut on my
task bar to that non-existant 'backup' path. Now no other
applications such as ICQ or Yahoo Messenger will launch IE
when I click on a link.

Oops. I entered that wrong. There should not be a 'backup'
in the correct path. The actual installation of IE is in:

C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe

but for some reason Windows keeps creating the shortuct to:

C:\Program Files\backup\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe

....which does not exist.

Because you have (or some application has) changed the 'App Paths' value incorrectly:

Open Registry Editor and navigate to:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\IEXPLORE.EXE]

In the right-pane, double-click (default) and set the correct path:

C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe
instead of:
C:\Program Files\Backup\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe

Now, type this command from RUN box:
shmgrate.exe OCInstallReinstallIE

That worked. Thanks!
Now how do I prevent that from happening again? I can
never touch 'Set Program Access and Defaults" again?

Oh, I forgot. I did do a Window Update recently. Could a
IE update installation have messed it up?

It might be the cause, or someone has created a backup copy of Iexplore.exe and ran from there. Now, you can use Program Access and Defaults very well. (it should not revert the setting back to backup folder)
