Hello everyone, new to the group here. I am looking for advice regarding the
possibility that my computer is "gone". I recently added a program
downloaded from the internet and I think it has my computer frozen now.
Whenever I boot up the computer, all it does is show me my desk top and
that's it, nothing will open. I've tried to boot in safe mode and remove the
software recently added and that didn't seem to do the trick. This new
software may or may not have anything to do with my issue, but my gut tells
me it does. When I rebooted, there still was a shortcut on my desktop for
this program, so I don't think it uninstalled correctly. Any thoughts would
greatly be appreciated.

yeh,
you can repair the
windows system files
that got corrupted or
replaced with incompatible
files.

boot from windows setup cd
install new, point to the o.s.
the setup finds on your hd and
say yes to repair it.

afterwards, go into
safemode, delete the folder for
that program and delete any
entries for it in msconfig.

g.l.

OK.......what if I don't have my setup CD still? Im at work now, not sure if
I have it at home.

well, not sure.
will need to wait and get
home to see.

but if you can, get an emergency
bootdisk made from a functional pc.

insert a blank cd and select format
then select make it an emergency startup
disk. Before ejecting it/burning also
copy the fixboot and fixmbr from the
pc onto the emergency cd. Then
eject it.

The cd will help get into your system
c prompt if necessary.

The original suggestion i made was the
easy "fix all" method. But you might
be able to go into safemode and
restore your system from a restore
point that was functional before installing that
malware.

tell us what happens tomorrow...

thanks Ben, that's good info. Though could you help me with " restore your
system from a restore
point that was functional before installing that malware"

I would try System Restore.

If System Restore doesn't work in Normal Mode, it might work in Safe
Mode. To use System Restore in Safe Mode, press the F8 key during
reboot and choose Safe Mode. When your computer starts in either Safe
Mode or Normal Mode, System Restore can be used to capture a working
previous state. System Restore can't be opened unless the system is
bootable into one of these modes.

yeh,
get into safe mode,
start, program files, accessories, system tools, restore
a dialog will open and will ask if you want
to create a restore point or use a restore point
then a calendar will pop up and look for bolded
dates; as these are marked with the recorded
restore files/info. .

if you have tinkered with these features and
have been left alone, then it is likely windows
has been creating many restore points and there
may be "one" that indicates your system was
recorded right before installing the malware.
if not then you may have to use an older one.

You could do this in normal mode
too, but it is always better in safemode because the
only things running are 100% windows files that
are the bare minimum to run the operating system

hopefully, this will get back up n running...

let me (us) know, ok?
