XP CD burner "no disc" problem

Hi,

Wondered if anyone can help with the following XP/CD-RW problem
(operating system: Windows XP Home Edition, CD-RW model: MSI CD-RW
MS-8348):

I'm trying to use the Windows XP built-in CD burning facility. I am
unable to write to CDs, because I keep getting the message "There is
no disc in the drive" when using the CD writing wizard. There IS a
disc in the drive, and I have tried both CD-RW and CD-R discs. Both
the discs and the drive are "High-Speed".

One solution I found a couple of months ago was to have a disc in the
drive when I booted the machine. Unfortunately, that no longer works.
I have wracked my brain for system updates that could have caused
this change (windows update?), but can't think of anything.

The only advice I could find on Microsoft's support pages relating to
this specific error message, was to Un-Install and Re-Install the
driver. Did this. Didn't fix it.

Have spent hours searching for a solution - massive appreciation to
anyone who can point me in the right direction!

Thanks,

Carl.

The only thing I can suggest if the system recognizes the RW drive is to
check this setting---go to My Computer, highlight the drive, then right
click and select properties, then select the recording tab, ensure that
enable recording to this drive is checked.

I've been having this same problem and kinda-sorta found a work around.
Goto the drives properties setting and select the recording tab. Disable the
"Enable CD recording on this drive" box,
apply it, then re-enable it.
This seems to reset whatever the problem is (at least for awhile).

Thanks to you both for the replies.

Yes - recording is enabled on the drive.

Think there may be some mileage in the enable/disable suggestion -
didn't work first time, did work later (after a reboot?). When I next
get chance, I'll test this further and post again.

Another solution for me seems to be to open and close the CD drawer
until it recognises the disc. Averages about 8/10 times! Don't
remember reading this in the advert!!

Thanks again,

Carl.
