I have a mixed ethernet/wireless lan. All workstations have ethernet cards
and are hard coded with IP, DNS, etc (no DHCP). Two laptops have wireless
cards in addition to their ethernet lans. Everybody is running Windows 2000
except one XP laptop. One is a Windows 2000 server--not running active
directory, just as a workgroup.

Everyone is happy except the XP laptop named Latitude. It has:
XP Professional
Wireless Card
Ethernet Port
XP SP2
I have disabled the ICS firewall
It is running computer browser as is everybody else

I ran browstat:

Status for domain LCSYS on transport
\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{5F7FABF7-464E-4243-BACC-E4BCF6024852}
Browsing is active on domain.

There are 1 domains in domain LCSYS on transport
\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{5F7FABF7-464E-4243-BACC-E4BCF6024852}

PROBLEM:

I am trying to link to a printer on the Windows 2000 server and XP just
doesn't see it.

XP can ping it by IP and netbios name (I have an LMHOSts) file.

When I go out to the cmd line and type:

net use lpt1: \\freedom\hp5 I receive System Error 66 has occurred. The
network resource type is not correct.

When I do a new view \\freedom I receive the old System Error 53. I know
that means permissions. But the server freedom printer is set for everyone
to use. The guest accountn on the server is disabled.

LC,

Are all the computers in the same workgroup?

On Latitude, check to see if Simple File Sharing (Control Panel - Folder Options
- View - Advanced settings) is enabled or disabled. With XP Pro in a workgroup
with Win2K, you'll need SFS disabled.

With XP Pro, if SFS is disabled, check the Local Security Policy (Control Panel
- Administrative Tools). Under Local Policies - Security Options, look at
"Network access: Sharing and security model", and ensure it's set to "Classic -
local users authenticate as themselves".

With XP Pro, if you set the Local Security Policy to "Guest only", make sure
that the Guest account is enabled, thru Local User Manager (Start - Run -
"lusrmgr.msc"), and has an identical, non-blank, password on all computers. If
"Classic", setup and use a common non-Guest account, with identical, non-blank,
password on all computers.

Good Morning Chuck,

Everyone belongs to the same workgroup.

SFS was not disabled, but I disabled it by removing the check mark.
Local Security Policy for network access as already set to Classic.
I have set a non blank password for the "Guest" user on Latitude as well as
the Server, freedom.

Latitude still has an attitude--Can see any shares on Freedom. Can't link
to the printer.

You said that if you set Local Security Policy is set to "Guest Only" make
sure the Guess account is enabled, with a non blank pw. I'm not sure what
you mean here. I have the guest account enabled, but are you referring to a
particular policy under Security Options?

LC,

Under Windows XP Pro, you have essentially three modes for authentication:
1) Simple File Sharing ON, with Guest only authentication (ala Windows XP
Home).
2) Simple File Sharing OFF, with "Classic" (Guest / non-Guest) authentication
(ala Windows 2000).
3) Simple File Sharing OFF, with "Guest only" authentication.

Use of modes 1 and 3 require that the Guest account be enabled. Use of mode 2
requires that either the Guest account, or a non-Guest account, be enabled.

The Local Security Policy - "Network access: Sharing and security model" toggles
you between "Classic" and "Guest only" access (modes 2 and 3).

Windows XP Pro / 2000, by default, requires an identical, non-blank password on
all computers, for any account used for authentication.

Whatever your authentication method, the account used for authentication has to
be granted access, for authorisation. Either the specific account, or Everyone,
has to be listed in the two access lists for each item being shared, one under
Sharing - Permissions, the other under Security.

More about file sharing, between all different versions of Windows:
<http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...db-aef8-4bef-925e-7ac9be791028&DisplayLang=en>

You say you "can see" shares on Freedom from Latitude. Does that mean you can
open files too? Does that mean that the "net view \\freedom" command works now?

Please recheck your setup on both computers, then do "net view \\latitude" from
freedom, and "new view \\freedom" from latitude. Post exact results of both.

Cheers,
Chuck

more information:
As long as I disable my wireless connection, I can link to anything
anywhere. If I enable my wireless, I can continue to use those links still,
but if I try to link to something new, it won't let me. So I have to again
disable wireless, link to resource, enable wireless.

LC

Chuck,

Thank you for the explanation.

Latitude cannot see Freedom and Freedom cannot see Latitude.

From Latitude:

net view (enter)
\\LATITUDE
\\PFM

net view \\FREEDOM (enter)
system error 53 has occurred.
The network path was not found.

net view \\PFM (enter)
system error 53 has occurred.
The network path was not found.

FROM FREEDOM:
net view (enter)
\\DELLICIOUS
\\FREEDOM
\\PFM

net view \\latitude (enter)
system error 53 has occurred.
The network path was not found.

FREEDOM can view resources on Dellicious, Freedom and PFM

FROM PFM:
net view (enter)
\\DELLICIOUS
\\PFM
\\FREEDOM

net view \\latitude (enter)
system error 53 has occurred.
The network path was not found.

PFM can view resources from Dellicious, PFM and Freedom

DELLICIOUS behaves just like PFM and FREEDOM --can't view Latitude nor its
resources.

LC,

Actually, Latitude can't see the rest of the LAN, and the rest of the LAN can't
see Latitude?

Was the Browstat from Latitude? Run it from Freedom and PFM too, and post
results.

If all computers (including Latitude) are in the same workgroup, there are just
a few more commonly happening possibilities why browsing doesn't work. One is
connectivity, then missing protocols, and also firewalls.

Let's start with connectivity.

Test connectivity between Freedom and Latitude:
1) Ping itself by name.
2) Ping itself by ip address.
3) Ping the other by name.
4) Ping the other by ip address.
5) Ping 127.0.0.1.
6) Ping the router.
Report success / exact error displayed in each test (12 tests total).

Then protocols.

Are you running both Client for Microsoft Networks, and File and Printer Sharing
for Microsoft Networks (Local Area Connection - Properties), on each computer?
Do you have shares setup on each?

Are you running NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (Local Area Connection - Properties - TCP/IP
- Properties - Advanced - WINS) on each computer?

Finally, do any of the computers have a third party software firewall? Are you
sure that the "ICS firewall" (Windows Firewall SP2) is disabled on Latitude?
Try enabling it, and enabling the File and Printer Sharing exemption.

Cheers,
Chuck

LC,

Now we're getting somewhere. So the problem is connectivity (see my separate
rambling reply).

Is Latitude the only computer with dual NICs?

Start with the wireless card enabled. Then, provide ipconfig information for
each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.

And provide static route for Latitude.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "route print >c:\route.txt" into the command window -
Open c:\route.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.

All workstations are running Client for MS Networks and File and Print
Sharing. I don't have shares set up on each. Freedom has the most shares
and the printer is configured from Freedom.

Everyone is running Netbios over TCP/IP EXCEPT FREEDOM!!! AAGGH~!!!

Is that it?

FIREWALL:
The server FREEDOM runs BlackIce. I had the XP Firewall up and down. It was
down but once I got the ethernet part to work,I could link to the printer on
Freedom, I enabled it again. It seems to be running ok since. Except for
the fact that I am getting degradation on with both up again. It seems like
when wireless and ethernet are both active, I can no longer net view freedom.
When I disable wireless I'm able to view freedom. All the tests I did above
were with both wireless and ethernet active.

Let me know if I should enable netbios over TCPIP on the server. And, thank
you, I mean it!

LC

LC,

IMHO, you should enable NBT (NetBIOS Over TCP/IP) on all networked computers.
NBT is a network component that supports named resources (shares) on a LAN with
TCP/IP.

Are you using the lmhosts file by preference? Or simply to get around the
browsing problem? Which computers are you using lmhosts on? Are all computers
indeed on the same subnet?

Your network is unconventional to say the least. The lmhosts file is typically
used for named resources resolution on large, routed networks.
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=102725

If you have a properly setup subnet, the browser subsystem should take care of
your needs.

A typical Windows 2000 / Windows XP LAN uses on all computers:
- Browser service enabled.
- Client for Microsoft Networks.
- File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks.
- NetBIOS Over TCP/IP.

I am curious how PFM, and the other client computers, currently work.

Can you please generate an IPConfig and static route for PFM also, since you say
it is similar to Latitude in configuration. It may yet be possible to get
Latitude to work as PFM does.

Also, what is this "degradation on with both up"? Should this be explored in
more depth?

And your need to firewall Freedom with both / either BlackIce and ICF?

Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

Chuck,

I only used the lmhosts file to try and resolve the netbios situation.

I did enable netbios over TCP/IP on the server, freedom.

Freedom is the only server using Black Ice and Lattitude is the only
workstation using ICS.

I can now do a "net view" from latitude and see \\latitude \\freedom \\pfm.

If I do a net view \\freedom, I get "System Error 5 has occurred. Access is
denied"

Hmmmm....permissions?

If I do a net view \\latitude from freedom, I get the same thing, "System
Error 5...access is denied."

LC,

OK, progress.

If you can indeed now view each computer from each other, without use of
lmhosts, then one of the necessary improvements was addition of NBT.

If you are getting "access is denied", then that has two possible causes:
1) Inadequate permissions.
2) Firewalls!

Start by disabling, or properly configuring, BlackICE and ICF.

Windows 2000 uses Advanced File Sharing, which allows you to assign access to
any properly authenticated account, and also if required to the Guest account.

On Latitude, check to see if Simple File Sharing (Control Panel - Folder Options
- View - Advanced settings) is enabled or disabled. With XP Pro, you need to
have SFS properly set on each computer, and to work with Windows 2000, it should
be disabled.

After disabling SFS, check the Local Security Policy (Control Panel -
Administrative Tools). Under Local Policies - Security Options, look at
"Network access: Sharing and security model", and ensure it's set to "Classic -
local users authenticate as themselves".

With XP Pro, if you set the above Local Security Policy to "Guest only", enable
the Guest account, thru Local User Manager (Start - Run - "lusrmgr.msc"). If
"Classic", setup and use a common non-Guest account on all computers. Whichever
account is used, give it an identical, non-blank password on all computers.

After you get authentication / authorisation working between Latitude and
Freedom, re enable BlackICE if necessary.

Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

I had already changed the SFS on the latitude earlier by removing the check
mark and making sure Classic was chosen.

The Black Ice firewall on Freedom includes Latitude's iP address as being
welcomed in.

I can browse from Latitude and can see \\freedom \\dellicous and \\pfm.

When I link to the \\freedom printer manually, it does ask me for a username
and pw. I enter it and I get to the printer fine.

I can now browse from Freedom and see \\latitude \\pfm \\dellicious. If i
try to link to a share on latitude, it prompts me for a password and I'm in.

So i think now it is just permissions, but I can deal with that.

You're the best!!
